Halton Borough Council Recycling Awareness Doorstepping Campaign
Halton Borough Council contracted EnviroComms and Enventure, to develop and execute a wide reaching awareness programme that utilises an array of media channels, to promote and explain the changes being introduced to the recycling scheme throughout 2009 to residents. Enventure were commissioned to carry out the doostepping element of the awareness programme to raise awareness, increase participation, and ultimately raise the recycling rate.
Over a 9 week period, the taskforce of doorsteppers completed interviews with over 8,000 residents in the area, conducting surveys, promoting the recycling scheme, and distributing leaflets and reminders about scheme changes.
The campaign yielded some very optimistic results about recycling in the area. Residents were pleased about the opportunity to increase the range of materials collected, and were generally very positive about household waste recycling centre usage. The campaign identified materials with low capture rates that could become the focus of future marketing materials, and highlighted factors that would encourage residents to recycle more. Reasons for dissatisfaction and barriers to recycling were also established.
