Doorstepping

Doorstepping (also known as canvassing or face to face promotional work) is an effective way of promoting new or existing recycling schemes to the public. Research has shown that face-to-face contact with householders can be a highly effective way of increasing participation and reducing contamination in recycling services.

Education

Doorstepping enables the educational and promotional message to be tailored to the individual through one-to-one contact. Doorstepping staff or canvassers can deal with the barriers that prevent householders from recycling - whether it is a lack of recycling containers or the necessary space to store them, misconceptions about the service, what happens to the materials collected or a lack of understanding about why we recycle. The doorsteppers provide vital contact between the waste and recycling department and the householder.

Collecting valuable data

In addition to promoting the recycling message and services on offer, doorstepping also allows valuable data to be collected from householders. Tailored questionnaires or WRAP based questionnaires provide relevant information which can be used for future policy decision making, campaign development and service delivery.
