Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland – Anaesthetic Groups Survey

The Project

The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) commissioned Enventure Research to conduct a survey with Anaesthetic Groups to provide useful information to inform a paper being prepared by the AAGBI on the benefits of these groups. The paper was to be submitted to the Competition Commission to inform its inquiry into private healthcare.


Research Methods

An online survey was designed by the AAGBI and Enventure Research, which contained a series of 50 questions relating to the makeup and operation of Anaesthetic Groups. The survey asked questions related to, for example, number of hospitals covered by the group, the nature of the group practice, the number of members, the allocation of group profits and the number of anaesthetic consultants employed.

A link to the survey was emailed to a database of Anaesthetic Groups provided by the AAGBI within an invitation email. A number of targeted reminders were also issued to increase the response rate to the survey. In total, 32 Anaesthetic Groups from a range a geographical locations across the UK and Ireland participated in the survey over a two-week period.


Results and Benefits to the Client

Enventure Research provided a detailed research report outlining the findings, which included useful information from its members regarding patients, income and profits, expenses and competitors. The report was used by the AAGBI to inform the preparation of its paper to the Competition Commission.
