General Optical Council Public Perceptions Survey

The Project

  • The General Optical Council (GOC) is the regulator of optical professions in the UK and aims to protect and promote the health and safety of patients and the public
  • Enventure Research appointed to undertake its Public Perceptions Survey as part of its commitment to better understand the views and experiences of the general public

Research Methods

  • A mixed quantitative and qualitative approach was taken
  • A survey was administered to an online panel, with strict quotas set on age, gender and UK country to ensure a representative sample was achieved. 3,000 responses were received
  • Following the survey, five focus groups and fourteen in depth interviews were conducted to explore some of issues in greater depth
  • Focus groups and interviews were stratified across the UK to ensure representation, including both urban and rural locations

Outcomes

  • Research findings provided in a detailed research report and a presentation of the key findings was made to the GOC
  • Supporting infographics were provided. The report and infographics can be found here
  • The research provided the GOC with an up-to-date understanding of how the public and patients perceive the optical profession, including whether they see the profession as a healthcare service or a retail experience, whether they feel like a patient or customer when visiting an optician, their awareness of regulation and overall satisfaction levels
  • The research also allowed public perceptions to be compared to those collected in previous years to highlight how perceptions may have changed over time

Testimonial

The General Optical Council has worked with Enventure Research to deliver two large-scale research projects – our Registrant and Public Perceptions Surveys. Enventure Research’s management of both projects was excellent, from inception and planning through to the fieldwork, analysis and reporting of the results. The research involved both quantitative and qualitative methodologies with optical professionals and the general public, and Enventure Research provided research materials that effectively collected useful data and feedback from both these audiences. Their reporting of the research findings was excellent, as they clearly and succinctly communicated the key findings, helping the GOC to draw actionable conclusions and recommendations, utilising their understanding of healthcare regulation. They also delivered the research findings to our Council in engaging presentations, which received very positive feedback. They are a small and dedicated team of researchers who provide an enthusiastic, hands-on approach to research. We hope to work with Enventure Research on other research projects in the future.
