The General Optical Council (GOC) is the regulator of optical professions in the UK and aims to protect and promote the health and safety of patients and the public. The GOC appointed Enventure Research to undertake a survey to help it understand the views and experiences of its approximately 29,000 registrants.
An online survey was designed to gather information about registrants’ views, perceptions and experiences relating to the GOC and daily challenges faced in clinical practice. The survey underwent significant pilot testing before being issued to registrants to ensure it was relevant to registrants and easy to complete, collecting valid and useful data.
Following the survey, qualitative research in the form of focus groups and in-depth interviews, was conducted to supplement the online survey findings, providing greater insight into the results and investigating other topic areas not necessarily suited to be covered during a self-completion survey.
Results and Benefits to the Client
The research provided the GOC with an understanding of how registrants viewed the GOC and its role, how it could better engage with its registrants, highlighted training and education needs and provided insight into pressures preventing registrants from meeting set standards.
The results were provided in a detailed research report and a presentation of the findings was also made to the GOC, where open discussion on how the findings could be used to improve working practices and future GOC performance was encouraged.
