General Pharmaceutical Council – Insight into Initial Education and Training

The Project

  • The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) required research to explore the extent to which initial education and training prepares pharmacists for practice, the recent changes to pharmacist roles, and how initial education and training needs to change to reflect this
  • Enventure Research commissioned to provide this insight, targeting the three stakeholder groups of recently qualified pharmacists, employers and policy makers

Research Methods

  • Mixed methodology including quantitative and qualitative approaches
  • Online survey administered with all three stakeholder groups, promoted via direct email invitation and reminders
  • Almost 1,500 responses received
  • A series of 32 in depth telephone interviews also conducted with stakeholders to provide greater depth of insight

  • Detailed analysis of the survey data, highlighting patterns and key differences between stakeholder groups
  • Thematic analysis of in depth interview feedback
  • Production of a detailed final report, and key findings presented to the GPhC Education Advisory Group in a workshop
  • Insight used by the GPhC to inform its review of the initial education and training provided to pharmacists in Great Britain

“We have recently worked with Enventure Research on a piece of research looking into pharmacists’ initial education and training and preparation for practice. Enventure have been excellent to work with, both professional and friendly in their approach. They kept us informed of progress throughout the project, managed all deadlines despite the tight timescales and were very responsive to any requests, changes or queries. The research was a very robust piece of work and provided us with a detailed report that clearly summarised the key findings as well providing the richness of the feedback from participants.”
