RTPI Lapsed and Non-Member Research

The Project

  • Enventure Research commissioned to conduct research with lapsed and non-members of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)
  • Aimed to understand why a planning professional would choose not to join the RTPI, why a lapsed member would choose to leave the RTPI, and how the RTPI could improve membership retention rates and encourage lapsed and non-members to join or re-join

Research Methods

  • Combined quantitative and qualitative approach
  • Questionnaire designed by the RTPI and Enventure Research, with screening questions to establish whether respondents were lapsed or non-members
  • Survey promoted via email to a database of lapsed members, via the RTPI website, social media, at events and planner networks
  • Two focus groups and ten in-depth telephone interviews were undertaken to provide greater insight into the survey findings
  • Focus groups took place in Newcastle and London, and the telephone interviews held with a range of participants from across the UK

Outcomes

  • Almost 1,000 responses to the survey, and a wealth of qualitative feedback collected from the focus groups and in-depth telephone interviews
  • A final report was produced, combining quantitative and qualitative feedback together
  • Key conclusions and recommendations provided to RTPI
